Event Details

Miscarriages of Justice and the Work of the CCRC: the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) was set up by Parliament to investigate potential miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.  It operates under the Criminal Appeal Act 1995. Since starting work in 1997, the CCRC has asked the appeal courts to look again at over 830 cases. Recently, it has played a key role in helping to correct wrongful convictions arising from the Post Office scandal. Other miscarriages of justice identified by the CCRC involve developments in forensic science and medicine, police misconduct and points of law. In conversation, John Curtis, will speak about the CCRC’s unique range of powers, how it investigates cases and decides which ones are to have fresh appeals. He’ll cover real life examples involving serious crime, work with vulnerable applicants including victims of human trafficking and modern slavery and the issues arising from wrongful convictions. He’ll also talk about the CCRC’s paid internships that are offered in conjunction with the Kalisher Trust to those seeking a criminal law pupillage. There will be an opportunity to ask questions too.

More information on the CCRC is available at www.ccrc.gov.uk.

Information on the Kalisher Trusts is at: Welcome to the Kalisher Trust

John Curtis was called to the Bar in 1996 at Middle Temple. He is an employed barrister and In-House Counsel at the CCRC.
