Do you ever feel like a fraud? Do you worry your success may be down to luck? Are you living with the fear that any minute now you are going to be exposed?
If the answer to any of the above is ‘yes’, then you are not alone. This is Imposter Syndrome – a
unique form of self-doubt that causes stress and anxiety and leads to unfulfilled potential in 60-70% of the population*.
But thanks to Covid-19, both the number of people suffering from Imposter Syndrome, and the intensity of that suffering appears to be rising. The reality of returning to the office and coming face to face with colleagues, peers and seniors has become a source of huge anxiety for many. On paper you may look qualified, deserving and highly capable. But how you feel on the inside, particularly after prolonged periods of working virtually, is an entirely different matter.
Imposter Syndrome can manifest in many ways. The stress and anxiety it creates causes perfectionism, procrastination and compulsive checking; overthinking, overworking and underperformance. For this reason, the conventional view is that you have to get rid of it before you can succeed.
Caroline Flanagan begs to differ.
Caroline is a woman of colour from a working class background who achieved success in a predominantly white, male, middle class environment where she always felt like an imposter. After years of battling Imposter Syndrome, she found a way to turn it into a strength and is now using it to her advantage in both the virtual and real world. In “Imposter Syndrome in a Post Covid World”, Caroline draws on case studies and personal stories to explain why your Imposter Syndrome isn’t a problem and to provide a practical tool for turning it to your advantage so you can thrive in the real world.
