Middle Temple Library possesses one of the largest collections of American legal materials outside the United States. This extensive collection is located on the third floor of the Library. The Middle Temple has always enjoyed a close relationship with the United States with links going back to Elizabethan times.

The Under Treasurer is accountable to the Treasurer and the Masters of the Bench for the direction, executive management and strategic development of the Inn, supported by the senior management team and staff. The Under Treasurer is principally responsible for ensuring a modern, professional, efficient and effective operation in accordance with best practice as well as the values and objectives of the Inn.

By late Elizabethan times the four Inns were described as the third university of England. The Inns, as well as training those who would make the law their career, educated the sons of the nobility and country gentry, in addition to those others who would require some knowledge of the law in their lives. The Inns retained close contacts with the Court and with government and its administration.
