Masters of the Bench

Edward is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, where he studied Philosophy, and a graduate of Harvard Law School.

He was appointed a High Court Judge in October 2018 and was assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division. He was formerly a partner in the international law firm Allen & Overy LLP, where he co-founded the firm’s global derivatives practice in 1991.

He was for many years a senior external legal adviser to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, and chaired its Financial Law Reform Committee from 1999 to 2018. From 2005 to 2013 he was a member of the Financial Markets Law Committee, and an active member of a number of its working groups, some of which he chaired. He was appointed a Recorder (Crown Court) in 2009 and authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge in the Chancery Division in 2013.

Before his full-time judicial appointment, he was a Visiting Professor in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London and a Visiting Lecturer at Université Panthéon-Assas.
