Bio:

Steven Powles KC is at Doughty Street Chambers where he specialises in international crime, extradition and human rights. He was head of Doughty Street International from 2016 to 2021. He has represented both victims and those accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity at international courts and tribunals around the world, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL). He is currently working in the Attorney General’s Chambers in Seychelles,  prosecuting money laundering and corruption cases. He has previously worked with the Jamaica Council for Human Rights on death row cases; represented the Government of Trinidad and Tobago during diplomatic negotiations at the UN on the ICC; served as legal assistant to Judge Liu Daqun at the ICTY; and worked for the UN in Beirut on the international investigation into the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He has served as Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s War Crimes Committee. He is a Middle Temple Advocacy trainer and has given advocacy training at the ICC and the SCSL. He is co-author of Sweet and Maxell’s May on Criminal Evidence (5th/6th Edition) and OUP’s International Criminal Practice.
