Until his retirement in 2003, Master Mckenzie was, from 1988 , Registrar of Criminal Appeals and Courts Martial Appeals for England and Wales, the Queen's Coroner and Attorney and Master of the Crown Office and Master of the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice for England and Wales. He began his legal career in Brighton Quarter Sessions in 1963, moving to Middlesex Quarter Sessions in 1967. He was called to the Bar of Middle Temple in 1970.  He was the last Deputy Clerk of the Peace for Middlesex until the Quarter Sessions became absorbed into the Crown Court. In 1974 he was appointed Courts Administrator for the Newcastle group of Courts and in 1979, he was appointed Clerk of the Central Criminal Court.  In 1984 he was appointed Deputy Circuit Administrator for the South Eastern Circuit before his appointments to the Court of Appeal.He was appointed Companion of the Bath in 1999.

He retired in 2003 and in 2005, with Lord Woolf,  he undertook a Review if the Working Methods of the ECHR ( Report published in 2005 )  and from 2006 until 2011 he was Registrar of the International Civil and Commercial Court and also Registrar of the Regulatory Tribual, of the State of Qatar.

He has been married to Peggy since 1964 and has three sons.
