Ian Mayes QC read Modern & Medieval Languages and Law at Trinity College, Cambridge. A Harmsworth Scholar, he was called to the Bar in 1974, took Silk in 1993 and became a Bencher in 2001. In 1983 he was appointed Treasury Counsel to the Inland Revenue. He was Counsel to the Department of Trade Inspection of the bank run by John Stonehouse MP and a member of the Justice Committee on Fraud Trials. He sat as a Recorder and chaired the Disciplinary Tribunal of Lloyd's of London. He is Head of Chambers at 1 Essex Court. He has been Chairman of the Hall Committee and of the Church Committee and, for seven years, served as Master of the House. He is the Reader Elect for Autumn 2021.
