Middle Temple Students' Association

All student members of Middle Temple are automatically members of the Middle Temple Students' Association (MTSA). The democratically elected MTSA Committee is represented on all Standing Committees of the Inn whose work has a bearing on the interests of the Inn’s students.

The MTSA is committed to improving student life at the Inn by planning and promoting a range of activities that amuse, educate and inspire members to achieve great things throughout the year.

The MTSA officers are elected annually at the beginning of the legal year (early October) - more information below.

We also need student representatives from each Out of London (OOL) Bar Course Provider - more information here.

The outgoing MTSA Committee have put together a guide for new student members - full of information that they wish they had known when they joined the Inn.

Elections for 2025-26 committee

MTSA COMMITTEE ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD ON 7 OCTOBER 2025 - book to attend in person or online.

Taking on any of the roles is an invaluable opportunity to get involved with life at the Inn, develop key skills, and demonstrate your commitment to a career at the Bar.

You can sign up to run for a position when you arrive at the event; you can run for more than one position. If you are attending online, you must submit your choice of position(s) by 6pm on 7 October 2025 via a link that will be provided closer to the time.

Every candidate will then give a two minute speech. After the event, a voting link will be sent to all MTSA members.

Even if you're not sure about running, come along and chat to the outgoing committee members to find out more! MTSA are one of the only remaining two Inn student committees fully voted for by students, so come exercise your democratic power to vote for those who will represent you in the coming year.

A summary of each role from the outgoing committee is below.

President

Overall, the President’s role is to lead the committee and to represent the student body. You will represent the MTSA on the Inn’s Executive Committee, Hall Committee and Education & Training Committee. The Inn may consult you when it has issues/ comments about students.

Vice-President

In this role, you will support the President and the rest of the MTSA team. Ultimately, this role is what you make of it as it is reasonably flexible. You will represent the MTSA on the Inn’s  Membership Committee and International Sub-Committee.  Students may come to you with questions about MTSA and the Inn. You will also oversee the MTSA budget .

Mooting Officer

Primarily responsible for promoting and encouraging student advocacy at the Inn. Students come to Bar school with many differing levels of mooting experience. Some have international competitions on their CVs, whilst others have never mooted in their lives. It is your aim to help bridge that gap and to enable students across the cohort to develop their courtroom skills.

Debating Officer

You will oversee the development of debating teams - running debating workshops and facilitating debating competitions. The Monroe Cup is an internal Middle Temple competition. We also have an Inter-Inn Debating Competition each year.

Social Secretary

You will organise social events throughout the year.  You can also help organise and attend other events through the year, and be a friendly face for new students. You can also get involved with mooting, debating and other aspects of the committee, so you see a wider range of things and can share your skillset.

Equality Diversity & Social Inclusion Officer

You will represent the MTSA on the Inn’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee. You might plan events or projects that highlight and celebrate diversity and inclusion at the Bar.

Communications Officer

You’re in charge of all the MTSA’s social media accounts, such as Instagram and Linkedin. Make sure you check the messages often because sometimes MTYBA or societies at other Inns may want you to repost about their events or students may be asking questions.
