Chief Executive and Under Treasurer

Sir Christopher Ghika KCVO CBE comes from an Army career of over thirty years spent in command and policy roles both in the UK and around the globe. He was attracted to this role by the chance to contribute to leading an internationally respected institution into the future, because of the history and heritage that is a part of the Inn and the opportunity to further the work and development of the Bar through support to our members.

Director of Estates

Ian Garwood is responsible for the Inn’s extensive Estate and portfolio of historic properties, covering all aspects from asset management, building repair, major refurbishment projects and property acquisitions to tenant management. Through a joint arrangement with Inner Temple, Ian is also responsible for maintaining the fabric of Temple Church on behalf of both Inns. Initially studying for a Diploma in Architecture, Ian joined the Inn in 1979 as Assistant Surveyor and after a change in career direction went on to qualify with an Honours Degree in Building Surveying. He was appointed as Surveyor to the Middle Temple in 1998 and subsequently Director of Estates in 2004. Ian still maintains his passion for Architecture and is keen to ensure that the Inn maintains its historical heritage whilst meeting the modern day needs of the Bar.Ian Garwood

Director of Education

Christa Richmond is responsible for the Inn’s Education Department, which looks after the ‘cradle to grave’ provision of education, training, and general advice for members and prospective members of the Inn. The Department’s remit includes admission to the Inn, scholarships, Call to the Bar, as well as training and education for students, pupils, and practitioners. A graduate of Stuttgart University, Christa taught German at Bristol University for a number of years before working for Cumberland Lodge as a Conference Co-ordinator. She first joined the Middle Temple to work with Michael Sherrard when he established the Inn’s advocacy training programme, and she became Head of Department in 2002

Director of Corporate Services

Andrew Hopkin, a Chartered Management Accountant, became Director of Finance at Middle Temple in July 2008, before his appointment as Director of Corporate Services in 2016.  In this role, Andrew is responsible for the oversight and co-ordination of all Corporate Services activities in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Inn in terms of financial planning and management, strategic planning, compliance, legal, risk management and governance requirements. Andrew also acts as Secretary to the Trustees of the Charities administered in connection with the Middle Temple (the ‘Trust Funds’, which provide scholarship funding) and the Trustees of the Middle Temple Pension & Assurance Scheme. 

He has been at the Inn since 1997 and previously held the roles of Financial Controller and Management Accountant. Prior to joining Middle Temple, Andrew worked in a professional chartered surveying practice in Nottingham.

Director of Membership and Catering

Oliver Muncey joined Middle Temple in March 2014 having spent three years organising events and conferences in the life science and healthcare sector. First at One Nucleus, Europe’s largest life science and healthcare membership organisation, and then the Bio Industry Association (BIA), the UK’s bioscience trade association. Oliver is responsible for developing and implementing the Inn’s membership strategy, to design and deliver a responsive and supportive offering for both professional development and social activity to widen the participation of the Inn’s 26,000+ members of all backgrounds. This includes but is not limited to the Inn’s UK and international events and initiatives, membership facilities, societies, forums, publications, and wine collection.

Andrew Hopkin

Archivist and Head of Collections

 

Barnaby Bryan has been the Inn’s Archivist since 2019, having joined the department in 2015. He read Philosophy at King’s College, Cambridge, before qualifying as an Archivist at University College London. He has undertaken archival work at various institutions, including Unilever’s corporate archive in Port Sunlight, and co-ordinates the City Archivists Group.

He is responsible for the management, care and development of the Inn’s extraordinary Archive, which encompasses records from 1501 to the present day, in formats from parchment to PDF, and represents the ‘corporate memory’ of the Middle Temple. He is also responsible for many of the Inn’s other historic collections, including paintings, armour, silver and heraldic material. Through this work he and his team ensure that the Inn’s members and staff, as well as the wider scholarly community, are able to access, understand and learn from these rich and diverse collections – both now and in the future.

 

Librarian

 
Dr Renae Satterley completed her BA (Hons) in Social Anthropology at Concordia University and her MLIS at McGill University, both in Montreal, before moving to England in 2004. She was employed as the Bibliographer for the Norman Waddleton collection at Emmanuel College Cambridge in 2004, before joining the Inn as Rare Books Librarian in 2006. She then progressed to Senior Librarian (2010) and Deputy Librarian (2014) before being appointed Librarian in 2016. As Librarian, Renae is responsible for developing and delivering a library and information strategy and service, as well as ensuring the efficient delivery of a high-quality and cost-effective library and information service to the Inns of Court and their members, including those outside of London, always adhering to best practice in terms of legal information provision, copyright and data protection.  Renae also oversees the Rare Books & Manuscripts Collection, providing access to scholars and members, and ensuring it remains in a fit state for future generations.

Head of Communications and Engagement

 

Mallary joined Middle Temple as Head of Communications and Engagement in May 2025, with responsibility for leading the Inn’s communications strategy and strengthening engagement with members. Her role focuses on ensuring the Inn’s voice is clear and relevant to audiences ranging from senior jurists to students training for the Bar and the public.

Previously a BBC and CNN on-air reporter and producer, she brings extensive national and international media experience to the role. She has since led communications functions for major NGOs, campaigning organisations and charities, including Transparency International UK, the EY Foundation and Age UK. Her work has contributed to the passage of anti-money laundering legislation and to raising United Nations awareness of corruption in global health.

Head of Development & Fundraising

 
Socorro leads Middle Temple’s fundraising activity in support of the Middle Temple Charity (MTC). Including, advancing MTC's objectives across education and access to the Bar, the promotion of the rule of law, the advancement of diversity in legal services, and the preservation and conservation of the Middle Temple Inn and its historic estate. With over 20 years’ experience as a fundraising leader, Socorro brings a strategic and inclusive approach to developing individual giving, partnerships, and donor engagement. Her career spans NGOs, corporates, foundations and government funders, where she has delivered end‑to‑end fundraising strategies, secured and stewarded high‑value gifts, and built long‑term relationships with a wide range of supporters.

Head of HR

 

As Head of Human Resources, Sarah helps shape the Inn’s people culture—ensuring that HR practices and organisational culture align with Middle Temple’s values, vision, and strategic objectives. She leads the HR function with a focus on supporting both the day‑to‑day operations of the Inn and its long‑term ambitions.

A CIPD Level 7 qualified HR professional with over 20 years’ experience across the private, charity, and not‑for‑profit sectors, Sarah brings a depth of operational and strategic HR expertise to the Inn. She has worked with organisations including Harrods, The National Deaf Children’s Society, The Royal Parks and The Royal Household, where she gained extensive experience in employee relations, performance management, organisational development, workforce planning, recruitment, reward and learning and development.
