Anglo-Israel Scholarship

This scholarship is on hold in 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic.

This scholarship has been established to enable the candidate to observe legal practice in Israel, within the context of a law firm and in the courts.  The scholarship is aimed at applicants who would like to practise commercial law and have a particular interest in international commercial law. It is open to applicants before, during or after pupillage. They must be members of the Inn and have successfully completed the BPTC at the time of commencing the scholarship.

The successful candidate will be attached for about three weeks to a firm of commercial lawyers in central Tel Aviv whose practice is largely concentrated on corporate, commercial and real-estate law, international tax law, trusts and estates law.  The candidate will also have an opportunity to spend some time with judges sitting in both criminal and civil cases. There will be an opportunity to see the work of the Israeli Public Defender’s Office, if the candidate wishes to do so, and to visit the Supreme Court in Jerusalem.  The scholarship is designed to enable the successful candidate to have some time free to travel around the country. A single scholarship, worth about £4,000, is awarded each year for a stay of about four to five weeks and will cover return economy flights, accommodation, which the candidate is expected to arrange independently, and living expenses while in Israel. The placement will typically take place in the autumn of 2020 although for the exact timing of the stay in Israel the successful candidate will liaise with the law firm directly.

It is important that the successful candidate is a good ambassador for both the Bar and the Middle Temple.

Priority may be given to suitable candidates who have not previously visited Israel.  The selection panel will, if it thinks fit, create a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed.

At the conclusion of the scholarship, a short report to the Inn of the time spent in Israel should be submitted to the Scholarships Officer. Please click here to see the report of 2019's Anglo-Israel Scholar, Shanzé Shah.
