Joint and several liability for climate change-related harms? - Dr Megan Blomfield

Climate change results from cumulative anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. This poses a significant challenge for plaintiffs seeking compensation for climate change-related injuries, because they cannot attribute the harms that they experience to the emissions of any particular states or corporations. In this talk I will discuss this causation challenge for climate litigation, and consider whether the doctrine of joint and several liability could have a role to play in addressing it.

Dr Megan Blomfield is a Senior Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. Her research concerns global justice and the environment, focusing on the problem of climate change. She is currently working on a book project examining questions of causal, moral and legal responsibility for climate change-related harms, given their complex causal nature.

Student members (including transferring lawyers) must attend all elements of the event in order to be awarded the Qualifying Session. This includes any lecture/talk/reception/dinner/speeches.
