Alex Harding is a barrister and Head of Claims at HWF, his talk on "Personal Productivity" will discuss the below.

As advances in Artificial Intelligence change working patterns for all lawyers it is increasingly vital that lawyers think about their own personal productivity habits.  AI tools will likely reduce the volume of low skill / time intensive document tasks and may limit some of the current 'shallow work' associated with email and constant connectivity.

In this context lawyers need to rediscover uninterrupted ‘Deep Work’ to produce work which is not easy to replicate and which offers genuine human expertise and insight to complex problems.
As we embrace the AI revolution barristers will learn to work with new and exciting technologies, but it will be equally as important for them to learn how to manage their own personal productivity and think carefully about their daily routine.

Student members (including transferring lawyers) must attend all elements of the event in order to be awarded the Qualifying Session. This includes any lecture/talk/reception/dinner/speeches.

Learning Aims

After this session, students should be able to:

  • Describe how to use email inbox management protocols to minimise disruption while still responding to time sensitive information.
  • Idenify how to practise ‘deep work’ and to maximise focus using time blocking techniques.
  • Identify how to periodise your working day to work on your highest value tasks when you have the  greatest focus (the importance of knowing what an ‘optimal’ daily routine is).
  • Assess the benefit of daily and weekly goal setting exercises for time management (beyond a  standard 'to do’ list).
  • Describe how to create systems for dealing with administrative and ‘shallow’ tasks efficiently."
