Dinner for Members with Members of the Irish and Northern-Irish Bar.
There will be a pre-dinner QS lecture given by a The Hon. Mr. Justice David Barniville. The Hon. Mr. Justice Brian Cregan will be called to the Bench.
Please note this is an IN-PERSON event only.
Mr. Justice David Barniville, President of the High Court of Ireland, will give a talk in advance of the dinner hosted by Middle Temple and Master Treasurer, Paul Darling KC, in honour of the Irish and Northern Irish Bar on 8th March, 2024.
The title of the talk is “Celebrating 20 years of Ireland’s Commercial Court and other musings on the Irish legal and judicial system”.
Mr. Justice Barniville will provide a brief overview of Ireland’s legal and judicial system and of the role of President of the High Court in that system. He will talk about the establishment of the Commercial Court, as a division of the High Court, 20 years ago, in January 2004. He will discuss the work of the Commercial Court since its establishment and the types of cases dealt with by that court which are, like similar commercial courts in many other jurisdictions, seeing cases of increasing complexity and international flavour. In that context, he will mention the co-operation which exists between Ireland’s Commercial Court and commercial courts in other jurisdictions including those in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, through, amongst other things, the membership of those courts of the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts (SIFoCC). Finally, he will outline some of the steps taken by the Government, the legal profession and law firms in Ireland, with the support of the judiciary, under the umbrella of “Ireland for Law”, to promote Ireland as a leading global centre for legal services and dispute resolution.
It is hoped that the talk will of interest, in particular, to the many members of Middle Temple who have already been called to the Irish Bar as well as those who are considering taking the call as well as those who are interested in further developing the great relationship which exists between Middle Temple and the Bars of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
