This Survive & Thrive event is devoted to leadership. What it means; how to do it; what to avoid.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of being in private practice is that you are self-employed. After the agony of pupillage you become a tenant, and off you go, in charge of your own destiny. But what you discover is that, actually, as a self-employed barrister in private practice you are a member of many teams, some formally acknowledged as such, and others more nebulous. And for some of those teams you are, it turns out, the leader.

If you are Leading Counsel then you are expressly acknowledged as responsible as such, but Junior Counsel, too, often find themselves in leadership positions, whether at the criminal bar as counsel in a multi-hander for the first on the indictment; at the commercial bar leading a team dealing with complex document reviews; or on one of the many public inquiries in which core participants have many lawyers acting for them.

For barristers there is rarely any formal leadership training provided; as with many aspects of a career at the Bar, people just pick it up as they go along. To help you work out what leadership involves and how to improve your leadership skills Survive & Thrive has put together an evening focusing on leadership with Sir Jonathan Jones KCB KC, Malcolm McKenzie (Alvarez & Marsal) and Rebecca Wilkie (CEO of Advocate). Our participants bring hugely interesting and varied experience to the subject: Sir Jonathan Jones KCB KC is now at Linklaters and was formerly Head of the Government Legal Service; Malcolm McKenzie is a consultant who provides business leadership advice to major European companies, and Rebecca Wilkie is the CEO of Advocate, the free legal advice charity.  The event will cover:

  • The qualities which make a good leader
  • Practical tips and techniques to improve leadership skills
  • Common pitfalls to avoid

This Survive & Thrive session will leave you feeling much more confident about what being a good leader entails and how you be a better leader within your practice. Book your place now!

Members and students from all four Inns of Court, non-members, and guests are welcome to attend this event. Tickets for this event cost £5.
