All states are under an obligation to peacefully settle their disputes through non-judicial and, ultimately, judicial means. The increased specialisation of the international legal system has seen an increase in the number of international judicial fora (a so-called ‘proliferation’ of international courts and tribunals). There are courts which deal with international economic law, human rights law, international criminal law and the law of the sea, for example. The session will explore the impact of international courts and tribunals on the effectiveness and development of international law. It will reflect on the growth of the judicialization of international law and examine whether this is to be welcomed or not.
Dr Reece Lewis is a Lecturer in Law at Cardiff University and an Academic Fellow of Middle Temple. His research interests include all aspects of public international law though, at present, he is particularly focused on the international law of the sea and on jurisprudential questions concerning the international legal order.
