Guest Speakers: Master Rosalie Abella and Master John Dyson

(moderated by Master Andrew Hochhauser, Treasurer 2021)

This event is Free of Charge.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from two retired Supreme Court justices, from two different jurisdictions, on a range of issues including:

  • What the judicial role is and why it matters
  • The relationship between courts and legislatures
  • The greatest risks to and strengths of the justice system

Master Rosalie Abella:  Master Abella was Called to the Ontario Bar in 1972. She became Canada’s youngest ever, and first preganant Judge when she was appointed to the Ontario Family Court in 1975 at the age of 29.  Appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1992. Sole Commissioner of the 1984 federal Royal Commission on Equality in Employment. In 2004, she became the first Jewish woman and refugee to sit on the Canadian Supreme Court bench. Bencher in 2017. She retired from the federal bench in 2021.

Master John Dyson: Master Dyson was Called to the Bar in 1968 and took Silk in 1982. Bencher in 1990. High Court Judge, Queen's Bench Division 1993. Presiding Judge of the Technology and Construction Court 1998-2001. Lord Justice of Appeal 2001-10. Justice of the Supreme Court, 2010-12. Master of the Rolls 2012-16. He was Treasurer in 2017 and returned to 39 Essex Chambers to practoce as an abritrator and mediator.

Learning Outcomes

After this session, students should be able to:

  • Recognize the significance and purpose of the judicial role within a democracy.
  • Evaluate how to foster public trust in the justice system as it maintains balance between social change and precedent/stability.
  • Appraise the risks to and strengths of the justice system.
