Andrew Powell: The Modern Family Court and LGBTQ+ Rights:  Surrogacy, Same-Sex Parents and Trans-Parenthood

This event is open to Middle Temple Members and their guests as well as members of other Inns of Court, though guests are restricted to members only. Attendance is free but booking is required.

Outline:

This Qualifying Session will explore LGBTQ+ issues that have arisen in the Family Court. In particular it will discuss the treatment of same-sex female parents in the 1970s and 1980s. It will also examine more recent judgments concerning surrogacy, same-sex parents and trans-parenthood to consider whether the current approach Family Court, law and policy reflects the social reality of modern family life.

About Andrew Powell

Andrew Powell is a tenant at 4PB and specialises in all aspects of the law relating to children with a particular emphasis on surrogacy, fertility law and the international movement of children. He is recognised in legal directories for his expertise in surrogacy law and has just published a book ‘A practical guide to the law in relation to surrogacy'.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will acquire knowledge of both the current legislation and its history, as well as how the law surrounding LGBTQ+ rights operates in practice. They will be able to identify areas of legislation and reform that have worked and areas that require further reform.
