Event Details

With a champagne reception and black tie dinner, Private Guest Night is one of the Inn’s grander events.

Pre-dinner lecture:

Reform of the House of Lords: Matching Functions to Composition - Master Dawn Oliver

The established principal role of the House of Lords is to complement the House of Commons in holding the Executive to Account. How well does the membership of the Lords perform this function? How should membership be reformed? Would elected members do better?

Student members (including transferring lawyers) must attend all elements of the event in order to be awarded the Qualifying Session. This includes any lecture/talk/reception/dinner/speeches.

Other members and guests are of course most welcome to attend the lecture, or can attend the reception onwards.

Please note there are certain rules and customs that members and guests are expected to observe when attending formal dinners at the Inn.

Who can Attend

Student/Hall Members: Guests welcome, maximum three per member

Benchers: One guest per Bencher

The rules for guests at Private Guest Nights were recently updated in order to remove some outdated restrictions. Benchers are now welcome to invite the following: partners/spouses, members of other Inns, Middle Templars in practice and students. They may also attend unaccompanied, or bring more than one guest (subject to numbers).

Some restrictions, however, have been retained and, therefore, the following may not be invited as guests: clerks; clients; solicitors who may be involved in cases with other guests. If Benchers or members are concerned that they may encounter other Benchers or members with whom they are involved in an ongoing case, they are welcome to contact the Membership Office to ensure they are not seated in close proximity to each other.
