Join MTHS as Lord Hope addresses the Society on the creation of the Supreme Court.

Lord David Hope of Craighead, the former Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will deliver a lecture to the Middle Temple Historical Society on the creation of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

Lord Hope’s lecture will offer a bird’s-eye view from the perspective of retired Law Lord (with the benefit of historical hindsight) on the issues that arose from the unprecedented Constitutional Reform Act of 2005; the resistance to and support for the transition of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords to the proposed constitutional reforms, which were erroneously conceived by many as the Blair Government creating a US-style Supreme Court; the challenges associated with transitioning from the Houses of Parliament to Middlesex Guildhall, across the road from Parliamentary buildings; and, how the court’s self-understanding of its judicial functioning developed, once it had transitioned from House of Lords and reconstituted itself as a “Supreme Court” with the concomitant implications for the rule of law.

Upon the conclusion of his lecture, Lord Hope will take questions from the assembled audience in the Parliament Chamber at Middle Temple and from those attending on-line.

Please note that online attendance does NOT qualify for a QS. To receive a QS, you must attend this event in person, and attend the lecture and the reception or the lecture, reception and dinner.
