This is a unique opportunity to hear the author read from his latest book The Ratline.

Philippe Sands is Professor of Law at UCL and a practising barrister at Matrix Chambers. He has been involved in many of the most important international trials of recent years, including Pinochet, Congo, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Iraq, Guantanamo and the Rohingya.

The Ratline recounts the life of Otto Freiherr von Wächter, under whose authority hundreds of thousands of Jews and Poles were killed, including Sands’s grandfather’s family. Wächter was indicted for mass murder, but fled. With the assistance of a Vatican bishop he fled to Rome, in preparation for travel to Argentina on the ‘ratline’. In July 1949 he died unexpectedly. Sands’s book unveils a fascinating insight into this story, eventually solving the mystery that haunts Wächter’s youngest son, who continues to believe his father was a good man – what happened to Otto Wächter, and how did he die?

Refreshments will be provided and copies of the book can be purchased at the event.
