MTYBA and MTSA are hosting an event showing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement.  A panel will discuss the narrative surrounding the issues of police brutality, racial profiling, the tragic death of George Floyd and global protests.

 

Speakers:

Master Elaine Banton of 7 Bedford Row Chambers specialises in employment and discrimination law. Dealing with multi-strand discrimination matters advising individuals and public bodies in high-level policy matters. Previously, Treasurer of the Discrimination Law Association, and formerly on the Bar Standards Board Complaints Committee. Master Banton advocates for mentorship and access to the Bar. She is Co-chair of the Bar Council’s Equality Diversity and Social Mobility Committee and a Temple’s Women’s Forum Committee Member. Elaine is Chair of a theatre and a former school governor.

Courtenay Griffiths QC, is a barrister at 25 Bedford Row. He has a wide-ranging practice in domestic and International Criminal Law, providing representation in trials of genocide, crimes against humanity and other war crimes. His criminal defence work emphasis is on terrorism and murder, some of the most note worthy cases being; The PC Blakelock murder trial, The Harrods Bombing, The Risley Riot, and The Damilola Taylor murder trial.

Allison Munroe QC, has a mixed practice specialising in Family Public Law, Inquests/Inquiries, Crime and Mental Health. In all spheres of her work, she has focused upon acting for vulnerable clients with a particular emphasis on the protection of their civil liberties. She was part of the legal team that represented 71 of the 96 bereaved families in the historic Hillsborough Inquests (2014-2016) and currently represents a large number of the Bereaved Families, Residents and Survivors in the Grenfell Tower Fire Public Inquiry. 

Ambiola Johnson, of 25 Bedford Row Chambers and won the BTN Rising Star Award. Abimbola specialises in criminal and regulatory defence where she is particularly highly regarded for her handling of vulnerable clients and her ability to grip complex and difficult legal arguments. Abimbola is also the founder and host of the Manifesto read series. 

Ife Thompson, is a graduate from Sussex University and completed the BPTC in 2019. She is the founder of Black Learning Achievement Mental Health UK (BLAMUK), an educational and advocacy organisation. In response to the Black Lives Matter Movement, Ife founded the Black Protest Legal Support UK to provide legal assistance to individuals taking part in the BLM protests. She has over 4 years of experience working with her community and is committed to ensuring the Black diaspora in the UK and beyond thrive. 

Lola-Rose Avery, is a pupil barrister specialising in family law at Guildford Chambers. Lola recently spoke out after the George Floyed tragedy and opened up about her personal experiences with racism in a viral Twitter thread. She has since appeared on BBC London to comment on the Black Lives Matter movement and interviewed on BBC Radio London to discuss the anti-racism protests

Aaron Mayers, is a future pupil barrister and will be commencing pupillage at 3PB in October 2020. Aaron currently works for Signature Litigation as part of a team specialising in high value commercial litigation. Aaron has a First-Class law degree from the University of Westminster and successfully completed the BPTC in 2018. He is a recipient of several scholarships, most notably a Major Exhibition Award from the Inner Temple. As an advocate for personal development, social mobility and equality of opportunity, Aaron has hosted various talks and seminars at universities with talented and diverse law students. Aaron sits as Deputy Chairman at Bridging the Bar, a charity which aspires to create a bridge between talented students from non-traditional backgrounds and the skills and experience necessary for a successful career at the Bar.

Qualifying Session Details:

For Middle Temple students and transferring lawyers - this event counts as one Qualifying Session.  To be awarded the QS for this event you are required to join the StarLeaf meeting on time and stay for the whole event (please see timings at the top of this page). 

In order to verify your attendance: Prior to joining the meeting, ensure that you have entered your full name.  We will be able to see who has attended online and will update the QS records accordingly (within 10 working days).

Booking Tickets:

Members of the Inn can book tickets online by clicking ‘Add to Cart’.  Please note that you must log in to book (if you have not yet created a log-in please register first). 

Unless the event sells out earlier, booking will close at 16:00 on the day before the event.

Please note: You cannot book a ticket online for another member of the Inn if that member needs the Qualifying Session assigned to their record. They must log in and book their own ticket, or alternatively contact the Treasury Office.

Cancellations:

Where we have a waiting list we will be able to offer your ticket to someone else, so please do let us know if you are no longer planning to attend.
