Join us for a discussion with Master Afua Hirsch, author of Decolonising my Body and Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging, and His Honour Judge Edward Connell, about the challenges and rewards of autobiographical writing.
Master Afua Hirsch
Afua Hirsch was called to Bar in 2006 and is a Bencher of Middle Temple. Master Hirsch won the Royal Society of Literature’s Jerwood Prize for non-fiction in 2016 for her first book – Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging. Afua’s 2023 book, Decolonising My Body, was named the Political Book of the Year by Waterstones. In 2019 Master Hirsch was appointed Wallis Annenberg Chair in Journalism and Communication at the University of Southern California. Afua has written extensively for newspapers and other publications and appeared regularly on Television and is the co-presenter of the chart topping Podcast, Legacy.
His Honour Judge Edward Connell
His Honour Judge Edward Connell was called to the Bar in 1996 and was appointed a Circuit Judge in 2019 and is currently the Resident Judge at Croydon Crown Court. In his spare time Edward is a football referee, campaigns against discrimination in sport and sits on London FA disciplinary tribunals. Edward hosts a podcast called “Coming Out the Pod” where he interviews people about their coming out stories and co-hosts a referee podcast called “Red or Yellow”. Edward played a leading role in establishing the LGBTQ+ Judges Association and sits on the National Judicial Diversity Committee. Edward was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law for his contribution and dedication to equality and diversity in the judicial system.
