Islam, Astronomy and Arabic Print
Middle Temple Library
This event which accompanies the Library's Islam, Astronomy and Arabic Print exhibition will include two talks. Dr Musharraf Hussain will be exploring Quranic verses relating to astronomy. Professor Charles Burnett will discuss astronomy in relation to mathematics, geometry and music as harmonious measurements of the universe.
Dr Musharraf Hussain is the translator of The Majestic Quran and the chief executive of Karimia Institute. In 2009, he was awarded an OBE for his services to community relations in Britain. He was also the chair of the Christian Muslim Forum, a senior trustee of Muslim Hands, trustee of the National Centre for Citizenship and Law.
Professor Charles Burnett is Professor of the History of Islamic Influences in Europe at The Warburg Institute. His research on the transmission of texts, techniques and artefacts from the Arab world led him to study Arabic and Latin manuscripts of texts on philosophy, arithmetic, geometry, astrology, astronomy, medicine and magic. He has documented the lives of the Latin translators, their motives, their relationships with Arabic/Islamic culture, and with scholarly communities in the West.
Soft drinks and snacks will be provided after the event.
