Event Details:

Two outstanding musicians return to Middle Temple on 22 May: mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley and James Baillieu, with an exciting programme of beautiful songs.

Anna has sung for us before, to general acclaim. She is a recipient of a Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera Vocal Fellowship and is a laureate of the Das Lied Competition, Berlin and the London Handel Singing Competition. She was selected by YCAT in 2012. James Baillieu too has performed for us. In my view, he is the finest accompanist of his generation. He was described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘in a class of his own’. He has been the prize-winner of the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, Das Lied International Song Competition, Kathleen Ferrier and Richard Tauber Competitions.

Their programme begins with the master of melody Dvorak’s Cigánské Melodie (Gypsy Songs). They include one of his most beautiful: Songs my Mother Taught Me. They are followed by Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). These wonderful songs were my introduction to Mahler: having heard them, I became an enthusiastic Mahlerian.

Anna has a special affinity with Mahler’s songs, and I greatly look forward to her performance. They are followed by songs by Ilse Weber, a Czech poet and composer whose life was tragically cut short. The lullaby Weigala will move the hardest of hearts.

Finally, back to Latin America for Braga’s Canções nordestinas do folclore brasileiro (Songs of North East Brazilian Folklore).

Come and you will enjoy.
