The Present Day

Although the formal study for the Bar has now passed to outside institutions, the involvement of the Inns in education is as important as ever. At student level, the Inn offers training to augment the professional training courses. After Call, it provides training in advocacy and professional ethics to newly called barristers in pupillage and under the New Practitioners’ Programme. A programme of lectures is part of the Continuing Professional Development for practitioners at all levels. Speaking more generally, the Inn aims to provide an environment in which members are inducted to the practice and ethos of the Bar, both through specific training and by example.

While the syllabus for the first students to come to the Middle Inn of the Temple would have little relevance today, the education of those who practise at the Bar remains a central function of the Middle Temple.
