The Right to be Heard: The Future of Advocacy in Canada

Final Report of the Modern Advocacy Task Force

The Advocates’ Society established the Modern Advocacy Task Force in the spring of 2020 to undertake a comprehensive review of the role of oral advocacy in Canada and to make recommendations for the modernization of Canada’s justice system. The Task Force has engaged in nearly a year of research, analysis, consultation, and deliberation and are pleased to share their final report.

This publication serves as a comprehensive resource on:

  • Foundations of oral advocacy in Indigenous, common law, and civil law systems;
  • Science of learning and persuasion, and its impact on judicial hearings and decision-makers; and
  • Modes of hearing used in legal proceedings across Canada and beyond
