Bio:

British Ambassador to the United States, Sir Nigel joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1976 and has served in Washington, Brussels, and Moscow and in a wide range of policy jobs in London, including as Foreign Policy and Defence Adviser to the Prime Minister from 2003-2007.  Sir Nigel was the UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels from 2000-2003.  He began his career in EU work as Deputy Head of the FCO's European Union Department in 1989-92 and has had a wide variety of other appointments in the FCO in London where he worked on the Japan Desk (1976-77) and on Zimbabwe (1979-81), including the Lancaster House Conference.
