Bio:

The Honourable Sir Ian R. Winder was appointed Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas on 3 August 2022. In this role, he serves as Chairman of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission, Chairman of the Court Services Council, ex officio member of the Court of Appeal, and President of the Bahamas Judicial Education Institute.

Sir Ian’s career spans both the public and private Bar in The Bahamas and in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He began as a prosecutor and crown counsel before entering private practice at Christie Davis & Co. He later served as a full‑time lecturer at the Eugene Dupuch Law School, before his appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas in 2013. He subsequently served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

He holds a BA in History and Law and an LLM in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados, and is a Fellow of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, Halifax, Canada. A contributing editor of the Commonwealth Caribbean Civil Practice (3rd Ed.), Sir Ian was knighted by His Majesty King Charles III in October 2022. He is married to Lady Marie‑Jacqueline Winder, and they have two children, Ian Spence and Asha‑Marie.
