Bio:
Judge Tomoko Akane has been President and Judge of the Appeals Chamber of the ICC since March 2024. Previously, she was assigned to the Pre-Trial division while working simultaneously as part of a Trial Chamber. Prior to joining the ICC in 2018, Judge Akane served as Ambassador for the International Judicial Cooperation and as Public Prosecutor of the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office of Japan.
Through her responsibilities at the Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI), a member institute of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programmes Network Institutes (PNI) and at the Research and Training Institute (RTI) of the Ministry of Justice of Japan, she was involved in legal technical assistance and capacity building for legal and criminal justice practitioners including prosecutors and judges from other countries.
