Event Details

Relationship lies at the heart of bar practice. When you begin a cross examination, you enter into relationship with the witness. When you meet a client, make submissions to a judge, work with colleagues, you create and work within a relationship.  Communication brings our presence to relationships and shapes them for better or for worse.

This workshop is all about relationship skills and communicating within them.  You will explore what relationships are about, learn tools to become more skilful at managing them and communicating within them, and widen your capacity to bring different ways of being into the relationships which you have. We will focus on relationships with clients and those we enter into in advocacy and provide participants with the opportunity to develop their skills in a small group environment.

The workshop will be delivered by James Pereira KC who is a barrister and certified executive coach, with a particular interest in the interface between personal development and professional performance.

There are limited spaces so book now to avoid disappointment. There will be a waiting list so if you would like to attend but the event is booked out, please email members@middletemple.org.uk to express your interest. Please also email us if you are a member of another Inn and would like to attend, as we may have spaces available.

Please note that this event is in-person only and that places are capped at 18.

This event is part of a series of workshops aimed at teaching barristers tools which will make them more effective in leadership, communication, team work and serving their clients. The first workshop “How do we practice from a place of strength?” took place on 15 April and the third will be scheduled later in the year.

Our next joint hybrid event with the Talent Retention Working Group on how we can create more successful and enduring relationships at all levels in the workplace through effective and constructive communication, will take place on 4 June 2024. The event will  focus on the communication between clerks/practice managers and barristers. It will be led by Dr Anna Colton, a chartered clinical psychologist and executive coach and will include demonstrations of best practice and be moderated by Lady Justice Whipple – to see the event page, click here.
