Welcome
Welcome to the Temple Church, the church of Inner and Middle Temple.
We are here to serve the two Inns’ members and staff, and all those who work in this oasis of calm known as The Temple. We are glad to welcome visitors as well, from all over the world, to this beautiful and historic place at the very centre of London. Whether you want to discover one of the city’s loveliest areas, find some peace and quiet, or pray for your own loved ones here and at home, you are welcome.
My colleagues and I look forward to seeing you.
Middle Temple Library possesses one of the largest collections of American legal materials outside the United States. This extensive collection is located on the third floor of the Library. The Middle Temple has always enjoyed a close relationship with the United States with links going back to Elizabethan times.
There are certain rules and customs that members are expected to observe when attending formal events at the Inn.
European Union and Member States
For fifty years, Middle Temple Library has maintained and developed a nationally significant collection of European legal materials. The collection continues to evolve in tandem with important legislative and judicial shifts within the European Union, as well as the UK’s ever-changing relationship with it: from its membership in 1973 to its withdrawal in 2020.
The European collection is located on the third-floor in the Library and comprises the following materials:
The scheme gives students the opportunity to marshal with a judge (sit with him or her on the bench in court), usually for between one to three days, occasionally longer. As well as showing a different perspective on the courtroom itself, it can be an opportunity to speak to the judge informally, which can give further insight into the case at hand and the workings of a court more generally.
Our judicial members participating in the scheme do so voluntarily. We are very grateful for their time and expect students to approach any placement with professionalism and courtesy.
The 450 years since Middle Temple Hall was completed have seen many instances of unruly conduct, rule-breaking, bad manners and even violence taking place under its impressive double hammerbeam roof. This month we look back at this varied history of misbehaviour, from sartorial faux-pas to sword-fighting.
