VACANCY: Chair of the Inns of Court and Bar Educational Trust (ICBET)
Term commencing on 1 January 2022
The Council of the Inns of Court (COIC) wish to appoint a new Chairman for the Inns of Court and the Bar Educational Trust (ICBET) to replace the Hon. Mrs Justice Tipples DBE, who is retiring from this role on 31 December 2021.
About ICBET (Charity No. 313524)
ICBET is a charitable organisation that supports the activities of organisations engaged in the further education of pupils and young and recently qualified barristers through the awarding of grants. In addition to the Chairman, ICBET has four Trustees nominated by COIC and four trustees nominated by the Bar Council. About the role of Chairman
The Chairman is responsible for chairing Trustees’ meetings, leading discussions with Trustees in relation to all matters affecting ICBET, and working with ICBET’s investment manager and administrator. The Trustees normally meet three times in a year, usually in February, July and October and they play a key role in deciding which grants should be made.
The Chairman and Trustees are responsible for:
- considering applications for grants;
- understanding financial statements in relation to the charity, preparing the Trustees' Report and the accounts in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards;
- reviewing the appointment of the investment manager;
- safeguarding the assets of the charity;
- ensuring compliance with charity law and the public benefit test.
The Chairman is expected to serve a term of at least 3 years. The position of Chairman is non-remunerated.
Knowledge and experience
Ideally (i) knowledge or experience of the Bar educational system, (ii) an understanding of accounts/financial matters, managing an investment portfolio, the role of a charity trustee, and (iii) leadership experience at a senior level. The candidate can be a member of the Bar or Judiciary, and anyone who is interested will be considered.
