The Art of Influencing | Saturday 11 May 2019

Throughout our lives, we have been told not judge a book by its cover, yet we all do it, without thinking, why? Because humans are primarily visual beings, we are pre-programmed to look at another person and create an unconscious impression, based purely on what we see on the surface. This impression will be influenced by our own cognitive biases – biases that will create an emotional reaction within us, which triggers how we assess the person’s personality and character.Of course, as barristers, we may think that our personality and character has no place in the courtroom, since we can influence the judge or the jury intellectually, simply by delivering our legal argument. The judge or jurors will listen attentively to all the facts and the evidence, and make an informed decision based solely on the merits of the case. But unfortunately, our decision making process is far more complicated than that, because the brain is designed to make decisions based on emotion (how it feels about the person making the argument) and not logic. So the initial impression you make on the judge, the juror, and how they feel about you, will have a significant impact on his or her final decision. Therefore, before the judge or jury ‘buy’ your legal argument, there’s something far more important they need to buy first…you. This 2-hour session is designed to give you an overview of the key insights and strategies into what the world’s most successful people do differently, in order to powerfully influence a successful outcome, in any situation. When: Saturday 11 May 2019
