Pupil Supervisors

Fundamental change to the process: Pupil Supervisors no longer have to apply to their Inn for approval.

On 1 April 2019, the BSB Handbook was amended and the new Bar qualification rules came into force. In addition, on 27 March 2019 the BSB signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Inns of Court, setting out the roles and responsibilities of the BSB and the Inns under the new rules.

Under the new rules, Authorised Education & Training Organisations (AETOs) are now responsible for appointing suitable pupil supervisors for their pupillages.

The new Bar Qualification Manual is available at https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/qualifying-as-a-barrister/bar-training-requirements/bar-qualification-manual-index/.

C2 of the Manual outlines how AETOs “register” pupil supervisors, see https://www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/media/1983675/bqm_part_2c_-_c2_responsibilities_of_aetos.pdf.

The Inns will continue to offer briefings. In London, the four Inns take turns in order to offer a reasonably even spread of dates throughout the year. Courses are usually held in the evenings and last three and a half hours (including break).  Middle Temple members should contact Christa Richmond at c.richmond@middletemple.org.uk to book a place on any of the London briefings.

The dates of the next scheduled briefings are:

Thursday 2 May 2019 Inner Temple
Monday 8 July 2019 Gray's Inn
Thursday 26 September 2019 Lincoln's Inn
Wednesday 13 November 2019 Middle Temple
