Event Details

Students Members are Called to the Bar in a traditional ceremony held in Middle Temple Hall.

Applications for Call must be made in advance.  Full details HERE.

For the safety of yourself and other attendees, it is advised that you take a lateral flow test before attending the event.

If you have developed Coronavirus symptoms please do not attend. Contact CalltotheBar@middletemple.org.uk.

Masks should be worn when you are indoors (unless you are medically exempt) but can be removed during the reception.

For any Bencher, member, student or guest who has reservations about joining us back at the Inn, or in the workplace, amber Covid awareness ribbons are available from the Treasury front desk in the Ashley Building. Wearing one of these around the Inn will notify colleagues to keep their distance and respect the fact that you are still cautious about Covid.

Call online

For any Callees who are unable to attend in person, or would prefer not to do so, thre is the option to attend one of the ceremonies online instead. You will join a Zoom meeting and will be able to see others being Called online along with the Benchers conducting the ceremony. We will try our best to show those attending online on the YouTube livestream during the ceremony, but cannot guarantee this.

Publication of Call lists

Please note that the names of all the students who are Called to the Bar (Callees) will be published in the Times, the Telegraph and the Independent newspapers after the date of Call. The actual date of publication will vary depending on availability of space in the newspapers.  Full names are published in order of Call; grades are not included.

Who can Attend

At present, the plan is for the ceremony to take place with ONLY Callees and Masters of the Bench present.  No guests are permitted in Hall.

This decision has been taken to enable all Callees who can attend in person to do so, some of whom would not feel comfortable spending a prolonged period of time in close proximity to a large number of people (pre-Covid there would be 250-300 people in Hall). This will be kept under review.

Guests

A limited number of guests per Callee may be permitted to be present at the Inn (TBC). Guests cannot attend the ceremony in the Hall however they would be able to watch the livestreamed ceremony from another room.  They are also welcome to attend the reception after the ceremony and to visit the photographers with you if you want to have family pictures taken.

Please note that you will have to book separately for the reception after the ceremony should you wish to attend (a booking link will be sent out 1-2 weeks before Call).

Livestream of Call ceremonies

We will livestream ceremonies via YouTube to enable Callees' friends and family to watch the ceremony from wherever in the world they may be.
