This event is open to Middle Temple Members and their guests only. Attendance is free but booking is required.

Master Robin Knowles 

Master Knowles has included pro bono and access to justice work at all stages in his life. In early practice at the Bar he contributed pro bono work on capital cases from jurisdictions with an appeal to the Privy Council. He assisted Lord Goldsmith QC from the early years of the Bar Pro Bono Unit (now Advocate).

Sir Robin is currently the Chair of Advocate (including Bar in the Community), and of the National Pro Bono Centre. He chairs the Access to Justice Standing Committee of the Civil Justice Council and the Litigants in Person Engagement Group for the HMCTS Courts Reform Programme. He has served on the board of Law for Life (Advice Now), LawWorks (the Solicitors Pro Bono Group), ProBono at the London Muslim Centre (chairman) and University House Legal Advice Centre (chairman). He chaired the working groups that established the Access to Justice Foundation, and the LIP Support Strategy. He co-chairs the cross-sector LASR roundtables established in light of the pandemic

After this session, students should be able to:

  • Identify the various ways in which barristers can become involved in pro bono work and the alternative souces of advice that are open to clients.
  • Examine the ethical duties of barristers.
  • Evaluate the impact that pro bono work has on wider society and on the development of one’s practice.
