In his lecture marking Holocaust Memorial Day, Master Philippe Sands discusses his recent books and research on the origins of international criminal law in light of the 75th anniversary of the opening of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, and the role of individuals in the making and breaking of the law.

Learning Outcomes:
After this session, students should be able to:
- The development of the concepts of genocide and crimes against humanity;
- The impact of the Nuremburg Trials in shaping international criminal law;
- Individual responsibility in the making and breaking of the law.

This session is intended to encourage students to reflect on the wider context of legal knowledge and practice. It therefore does not relate specifically to individual provisions in the Professional Statement, but to its overall aim of ensuring that barristers have the broader knowledge and understanding of jurisprudence which underpins their professional activity.
