Jessica Smith will discuss areas under scrutiny, progress on reform initiatives, and hurdles to implementing and sustaining criminal justice reform in the United States.

The killing of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests have sent shockwaves through the U.S. criminal justice system. Calls for reform are loud and clear, and are crossing traditional political lines. In this session, Professor Smith will discuss areas under scrutiny, progress on reform initiatives, and hurdles to implementing and sustaining criminal justice reform in the United States.

Jessica Smith, W. R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Public Law and Government & Director, UNC Criminal Justice Innovation Lab

As Director of the Criminal Justice Innovation Lab, Jessica Smith brings together a broad range of stakeholders to learn about criminal justice problems, implement innovative consensus solutions, and measure the impact of their efforts. Focused on “front end” issues such as bail, overcriminalization and policing, the Lab seeks to promote a fair and effective criminal justice system, public safety, and economic prosperity through an evidence-based approach to criminal justice policy. Jessica Smith serves as Principal Investigator on major grant-funded policing and bail reform initiatives. She also supports the work of numerous North Carolina entities focused on criminal justice reform, including the Governor’s Task Force on Racial Equity in the Criminal Justice System, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation’s Center for Reduction of Law Enforcement Use of Force, the House Select Committee on Community Relations, Law Enforcement & Justice, the North Carolina Chief Justice, and the North Carolina Courts Commission.

Jessica Smith is giving this talk more than once. You are only permitted to attend this talk once.  If you book this event having already attended a previous session your booking will be cancelled by the Education Department. If you book onto more than one of these sessions, all but one of your bookings will be cancelled by the Education Department.
