\ n \nAs a barrister you may well be calle d upon to represent somebody whom you do not like\ , or to present an argument with which you do not agree. \; \; The ability to look at your o wn case (and your opponent’s) objectively is a key skill.
\n \nMany of the cases with which b
arristers are involved involve people in a heighte
ned emotional state. \; Some raise a large amo
unt of public attention and\, possibly\, outcry.&n
bsp\;The barrister’s ability to remain calm and fo
cussed on their task is vital in these circumstanc
es.
\n We live in a society where such an app
roach to issues is often discouraged or ridiculed.
\; Expression of views on some topics attract
s significant negative attention and therefore man
y stay silent.
The purpose of the “Tou gh Topics” sessions is to assist in training barri sters\, in particular students and pupils\, to foc us on issues and see them in an objective and bala nced way without allowing personal views to play a ny part.
\n \nEach session will focus on a hig hly controversial issue or topic. \; \; Th e session will be chaired by an experienced lawyer . \; \; They will assist in facilitating t he session and ensuring that the purpose of the se ssion is preserved.
\n \nA speaker on oppos
ing sides of the issue will each speak (uninterrup
ted) for 10-15 minutes.
\n Participants will
then be allowed to ask questions which must only b
e designed to clarify or obtain further relevant i
nformation from the speakers. \; No “loaded” o
r partisan questioning is permitted.
O nce the questioning has finished\, participants wi ll attempt to summarise the arguments as objective ly and fairly as possible. \; \; \;
\n \nThese sessions are intended to b e interesting and stimulating. \; \; They are also intended to be sessions in which all thos e attending actively participate.
\n \nThey are not suitable for those who seek a session where one attends and observes with out becoming involved. \; Numbers will be limi ted for each session to ensure that everyone can p articipate. \; Please do not register for this session if you are not committed to attending or engaging fully in it.
\n \nStudents and tra nsferring lawyers need to attend the whole event i ncluding the reception in order to claim a Qualify ing Session.
