J ustice Soraya Ryan is a Supreme Court Justice and President of the Mental Health Court (MHC) of Quee nsland. \; The MHC provides an alternative pat h to findings of insanity or unfitness for trial - that is\, as an alternative to a jury determinati on before or at a criminal trial. \; The MHC h as a long history in Queensland but is the first a nd only one of its kind in the common law world\, although other jurisdictions have expressed intere st in its operation\, most recently\, South Korea. \; Justice Ryan will describe how the MHC ope rates and its benefits.
