Hall Committee 2019 Elections

Dear Hall Member,

The Hall Committee is holding elections for new members and six places are available on the Committee, to be taken up on 1 January 2019.

The Hall Committee has an important function within the Inn, which is to speak up for the interests of ordinary barristers, whether in private or employed practice.  We meet about six times per year, serving as members of the Inn’s four principal Standing Committees and also work directly with the Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer and the Inn’s staff. We also arrange a number of events, such as Oktoberfest and a Ceildh in November. We have a mission to reconnect with groups of members who feel particularly cut off from the life of the Inn and are interested in finding out how we can help the Inn provide services support for our members.

Please consider putting yourself forward for election, particularly if you have previously benefited from the generosity of the Inn in the form of a scholarship or entrance exhibition. If you think that the Inn has little relevance to your working life and could and should be doing something different, this is your opportunity to become involved.

The timetable for the election will be as follows:

Thursday 1 November 2018 - Nominations open

Sunday 18 November 2018 - Nominations close

Monday 19 November 2018 - Candidate details, ballot papers and voting instructions published on the Inn's website and members notified

Wednesday 5 December 2018 - Poll close at 5pm

Thursday 6 December 2018 - Results announced and confirmed at Hall Committee meeting

Friday 7 December 2018 - Results published on Inn's website

If you would like to be considered for one of these vacancies, please send an email to hallcommittee@middletemple.org.uk with the required information, stating that you understand and agree to the terms of the election (see below) and wish to be considered.

You are required to find a proposer who is a Hall member. This statement of support can be emailed directly to hallcommittee@middletemple.org.uk without the need for a signed nomination form, however you can also complete and return the attached form if you wish. These forms will also be available from the Treasury Office, Ashley Building.

In order to be eligible for election you must:

  1. Confirm that you understand and agree to the terms of the election;
  2. Provide a personal statement not exceeding 100 words;
  3. Provide an electronic photograph of yourself in jpeg format.

If you are unable to find a proposer, the Hall Committee will assist you with this.

TERMS OF ELECTION

I understand that the Hall Committee meets for a formal meeting a minimum of four times each year.  Meetings generally begin at 5.30pm in London and last for about an hour. It is possible for Members outside London to dial in. Representatives of the Hall Committee sit on the majority of Bench Committees, which have their own practices and duties. The main Committees sit four to six times per year, but some have, in addition, sub-committees, on which representatives are expected to serve as well.

I accept the above nomination and, if elected, commit myself to serve on such Bench Committees to which I may be allocated and to attend Hall Committee meetings.

I have sent by email to hallcommittee@middletemple.org.uk a digital photograph (JPEG) of myself and a short personal statement of no more than 100 words for use in the election. 

I understand that I will be expected to attend Hall events whenever possible.
