Colombos International Law Essay Prize
One prize of not more that £1000 may be awarded each year for an essay by a student member on a prescribed topic in Public International Law. Candidates must intend to practise at the Bar of England and Wales. The essay, which should be typed and clearly marked with the entrant's name and address, must be lodged with the Deputy Treasurer (Education) by Friday 13 August 2010 midday and should be of no more than 3,000 words.
Write an essay on one of the following.
1. "Custom is the only real source of international law" Discuss.
2. "A state is immune from the jurisdiction of the courts of the United Kingdom except when it isn’t. But a separate entity is not so immune except when it is" Discuss.
3. Is recent intervention in Afghanistan lawful?
4. Is the ius cogens illusory or does it really exist?
5. Is the local remedies a rule of substance or one of procedure - or is it both?
6. "We have returned to mare clausum." Discuss with reference to developments in the law of the sea since 1945.
