Colombos Public International Law Prize 2012

One prize of £1000 may be awarded every year on an Essay from a member of the Middle Temple on a prescribed topic in International Law. Candidates must intend to practise at the Bar of England and Wales. The essay, which should be typed and clearly marked with the entrant's name and address, must be lodged with the Deputy Under Treasurer (Education) by Wednesday 15 August 2012  and should not be more than 3,000 words.

Write an essay on one of the following:

 1. Was the killing of Osama bin Laden lawful?
2. Are treaties a source of international law?
3. ‘The analogy between title to territory and title to property is misleading.’ Discuss.
4. What is the ius cogens?
5. ‘Notions of “monism” and “dualism” are outmoded. For the real question as to the relationship between international and municipal law is that of “harmonisation”.’ Discuss.
6. What limits does international law place upon the jurisdiction of States?
