Scholarships & Prizes

The Middle Temple has long provided funds to help aspiring barristers along the road towards financial independence. Awards include scholarships for the CPE/GDL and BPTC (previously BVC) years, entrance exhibitions (covering the admission and call fees), and scholarships to the European Commission in Brussels & the Court in Luxembourg; India; Hong Kong; Toronto, Canada; and the USA.

Middle Temple offers an interview to every candidate who secures a place on the BPTC. In 2011 over £1million was offered in scholarships, and an Appeal is underway to secure funds to significantly increase this amount. A number of new scholarships have been made available through the generosity of both individuals and members of chambers.

Information is available regarding General Provisions of the Scholarships and Prizes, the Time Table for applications, the Criteria used in awarding Scolarships, descriptions of the various Major Scholarships, Entrance Exhibitions, Overseas Scholarships, Essay Prizes, and Other Prizes available.

In addition, the Inn has an Appeal to increase funding for its scholarships, and funding for the Pupillage Hardship Scheme.

The Bar Council and the Inns have reached an agreement with HSBC Bank Plc's London Barrister Commercial Centre in Fleet Street under which HSBC has agreed to make loans available to able and committed Bar students.
