Continuing Professional Development

The Inn provides training for pupils and practising Barristers, based on the requirements of the Bar Standards Board (BSB). Courses available include:

  • Pupil Courses courses providing experience and meeting BSB requirements for advocacy training and practice management. Most of these are two week courses.
  • NPP (New Practitioners' Programme) for practitioners in their first three years of independent practice. Advocacy courses are accredited with 9 hours of advocacy plus 3 hours of CPD; Ethics courses are accredited with 3 hours of ethics plus 1 hour of CPD. 
  • CPD (Continuing Professional Development). Practitioners are requird to undertake at least 12 hours per calendar year
  • Training the Trainers, based on the Inns' formula of advocacy training ("Hampel method"). Practitioners interested in becoming advocacy trainers will attend a series of courses to familiarise themselves with this process.

There is scope for members at all levels of experience, including BPTC students, to participate in some capacity in the training program.
