Library Collections

Scope of the Collections

UK Materials
Middle Temple Library holds about 150,000 volumes mainly covering English Law, including legislation, case law, textbooks, manuals for students, loose-leaf publications, journals and legal databases.  It also specialises in several subject areas such as accountancy, banking, commercial law and arbitration, financial services, competition law, employment, insurance, professional negligence, shipping, social services and trades union law.

Enquiry Service
Specialist staff are on hand to help library users in person, on the telephone, by fax or by email: click here for all contact details. The library is open weekdays and some Saturdays.  The library catalogue is available via the Library's homepage. Our Document Delivery Service provides copies of journal articles, law reports and extracts from books, by either fax, post, or e-mail.

Law Reports
Includes: The Law Reports, the Weekly Law Reports, All England Law Reports and many subject areas, both in hard copy and on-line.

On-line Services
The library subscribes to all of the major legal databases and some specialist subject ones.  A list, arranged by subject, of other recommended websites for barristers is appended here.

Government Publications
Includes: Statutes and Acts from 1235, secondary legislation and an extensive range of Bills, Parliamentary Papers and journals as well as subscribing to several specialist on-line services.

European Union Collection
Covers: treaties, secondary legislation, journals, textbooks, digests, case law and databases.  Legislation and case law from the Member States is also collected, including material in English from the new middle and eastern European Member States.  Although it is now part of UK law, this collection also includes an extensive collection of Human Rights case law and material.  A list of websites of use for both European and Human Rights law is appended here.

American Collection
Contains: extensive range of case law and legislation as well as journals and practitioners' texts for all major subject areas. The collection includes material from the 17th century.

Ecclesiastical Collection
Includes: textbooks, Church Assembly and General Synod Measures, legal pamphlets and a unique collection of mostly unpublished Consistory Court Reports starting from 1891.

Rare Books Collection
Although the Rare Books Collection contains many early legal texts (English, foreign and Canon law) and manuscripts, it also includes a variety of non-legal subjects.  Subjects represented in the collection include: theology , topography, early exploration, science and medicine.  There is also an extensive collection of literature.  Famous past members include Sir Walter Raleigh, Martin Frobisher, Richard Hakluyt, Charles Dickens, Henry Fielding, John Evelyn, Elias Ashmole, Inigo Jones and William Makepeace Thackeray.

Capital Punishment Collection
This is our fledgling collection founded in 2005.  It is a growing collection of historical material, textbooks, reports and personal accounts from countries around the world that still retain the death penalty, but the largest part covers the United States.  Much of the material has been donated by Amicus and Amnesty International, and by interested individuals.

Middle Temple Library
