Book Sponsorship

If you would like to sponsor a rare book at Middle Temple Library, please contact the Senior Librarian: Book Sponsorship Programme, Middle Temple Library, Middle Temple Lane, EC4Y 9BT, attn. Renae Satterley.

Middle Temple Library is unique amongst the four Inns in that we still hold the majority of books that have been collected since 1641. As the books have been read and used throughout the centuries, however, they have suffered wear and tear to such a degree that many of them are in urgent need of repair. With patrons' donations, the Book Sponsorship Programme will work towards saving these books for future generations.

Damaged bookThe Programme is fairly flexible. Donations can range from £175 to cover the cost of a simple book repair, to £700 for a full conservation treatment. For example, we have a 1560 manuscript that requires cleaning, paper repair, and a leather binding which would cost £400. Conversely, we have a 1634 printed book which has been damaged by mould, and thus needs to be cleaned and rebound at a cost of £175.

Groups, such as Chambers or a family, as well as individuals, are welcome to contribute. Sponsorship can be on someone's behalf: in memoriam, for example, or as a thank you, anniversary or graduation present.

The sponsorship will be commemorated with a bookplate placed in the book, with the sponsor's name, and an inscription, as well as a thank-you letter, and some before-and-after photos. Sponsors are welcome to consult the book before and after the restoration.

Books which require restoration range in date from the 16th to 18th centuries, and include a range of subject matter, including early exploration, geography, medicine, science, astronomy, law, religion, and history. Sponsors can either choose a book for restoration and contribute the full cost, or contribute towards a general restoration fund. Sponsors who choose a book can choose by subject matter, date, author, or type of binding (e.g. leather, cloth, vellum, or medieval manuscript). See the image to the right for an example of a book bound in a medieval manuscript which requires conservation work.

If you would like to be a sponsor, or simply require further information about the Programme, please contact the Senior Librarian at 020 7427 4830, or by email at r.satterley@middletemple.org.uk.
