Library Services

The Library offers a wide range of services as listed below.

Access: There is a wheelchair ramp up to the building entrance and a lift to all floors. Entrance doors are automated. The basement has a mezzanine floor, which is not wheelchair accessible, but library staff will fetch books for members. There are wheelchair accessible toilets on the ground and fourth floors. There is a magnifier and headphones (for use with the computers) available at the Enquiry Desk. All of the computer monitors are touch-screen. There is a portable induction loop at the Enquiry Desk.  

Computer Facilities: There are computer terminals located on each floor. No booking or log-in is required. All terminals are equipped with Internet access and Microsoft Office programmes. USB memory sticks can be purchased at the enquiry desk. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the main and gallery floors of the library. 

Document Delivery: This service provides members with articles, law reports and extracts from books and other materials.  A charge is made for this service. Conditional access is available to non-members. See the Document Delivery page for further information.

Ebooks and iPads: The library has two iPads which may be borrowed by all Inns of Court members at a small charge of £1 per day or £5 for a week. One of iPads has a range of e-books uploaded, including Archbold, the White Book, Cook on Costs and more; the other iPad has the White Book only. An iPad may be borrowed for up to one week at a time with one offsite renewal allowed taking the maximum loan period to two weeks. After two weeks the iPad must be returned to the library and seen by staff (to update etc.), and once checked, unless it had been reserved by another member, may then be borrowed again according to the same policy above. An iPad may be reserved for a particular time period– please speak to a member of staff.

Enquiry Desk: A team of specialist legal librarians are always on hand at the Enquiry Desk to help with your enquiries, and provide assistance in locating items and using the electronic sources.

Library Tours: The Library can offer tours to new members and those unfamiliar with the layout of the library, as well as training in legal research techniques, including the use of electronic resources. Please contact us for further details. 

Old Editions for Sale: The Library often has used old editions of books for sale.

Overnight Loans: Members of all four Inns may borrow current textbooks overnight. Books can be borrowed one hour before closing time and must be returned the following working day by 10.00 am. An iPad loaded with ebooks may also be borrowed (see above).

Photocopying / Printing / Scanning: Photocopying, printing and scanning facilities are available in the Library, at a cost of 10p per page, black and white and 20p per page, colour. An account can be created with staff at the Enquiry Desk.

Services to non-members: non-members may use the library by appointment only. Applications to use the library should be made by post or by email, addressed to the Librarian. There may be a charge for this service, at the discretion of the Librarian.

Weekend Access: In addition to the shared Saturday rota, members of Middle Temple are allowed to use King's College Library in Chancery Lane on Saturdays and Sundays on presentation of their Middle Temple membership card.
