Education & Welfare
The Middle Temple Students' Association welfare officer provides a weekly counseling service from 5:30pm to 7pm on Monday's during term time* for the 2007-2008 academic year. Appointments can be arranged as late as 4pm on the day by sending an email message to confirm availability. Sessions are held in the conference room near the American collection on the third floor of Middle Temple's library. Please address your request for an appointment time to Louisa Nye at welfare.MTSA@middletemple.org.uk. This service enables students to voice their general welfare concerns and obtain helpful guidance relating to individual circumstances. For more specific enquiries it would be helpful to arrange an appointment before Monday so that your matter may be dealt with in the most effective way. There are many resources available to you. However, it's less likely that contacts with particular expertise can be properly organised on very short notice. It may also be necessary to gather materials (e.g., forms, leaflets and publications) before the actual date of your session. All contact is confidential and your personal details will not be disclosed to any third parties without your consent. |
* Excluding BVC holidays. | Pupillage Seminars
The Education & Welfare officer organised a series of pupillage seminars to take place throughout the academic year. The first two seminars held on Thursday, 17th Janaury, and Friday, 18th April 2008, were well attended by Middle Temple students. At the January event, a panel of the Inn's barristers provided useful information to assist students with their Non-OLPAS (Online Pupillage Application System) applications, covering letters and CVs.
April's seminar focused on interviewing skills, which gave attendees a practical glimpse into the depth of questions and responses during a mock exercise involving three barristers and a student volunteer. Master Richmond, chairing the interviewing panel, offered Fred Cowell, MTSA's Debating Officer, an opportunity to make his case for pupillage in the hypothetical chambers. The panel's questions were met with direct answers, without the slightest hint of sounding reheared or insincere. The performances proved to be highly instructive for anyone preparing to interview in the upcoming season.
Following lively Q&A on both occasions, everyone enjoyed drinks and informal conversation.
