Terminology
| Barrister |
A member of Middle Temple or one of the other Inns who has been Called to the Bar
|
Bencher
|
A member of the governing body of the Inn ("the Bench"). There are currently over 210 active Benchers and approximately 90 Senior Benchers.

Call to the Bar
|
The ceremony during which student members of the Inn are awarded the degree of “Barristers”, following successful completion of the BVC. At the Middle Temple, those being Called wear wigs and gowns for the ceremony which is held in Hall.

An affectionate term for Middle Temple used by its members

| Marshalling |
A training course consisting of time spent with a Judge
|
| Master Treasurer |
The head of the Inn. Voted for by members of the Bench. The Treasurer is elected for a calendar year and supported by a Deputy Treasurer and the Under Treasurer and the staff of the Inn

| Parliament |
Formal meetings of the Bench presided over by the Treasurer
|
Pupillage
|
The final, practical, stage of training for the Bar. A minimum of two six month pupillages are required before acceptance for tenancy is possible
|
Qualifying Sessions
|
Student members of the Inn collect points from Qualifying Sessions which may be collegiate dinners, lectures or advocacy training sessions. Twelve QS points are required before Call
|
| Senior Benchers |
A Bencher who has retired from the active Bench. Can speak in Parliament but does not vote.

| Tenancy |
Working as a full member of a set of chambers

Under Treasurer
|
The Chief Executive of the Inn. Reports to the Treasurer and Parliament. All other members of staff report -through department heads - to the Under Treasurer
